Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen has announced $10,000 in funding for Mennonite Heritage Village. The money comes through the Community Places Program. MHV Executive Director Barry Dyck says it will be used to help fund two projects.

The first project involves work on the windmill. Dyck notes the windmill is deteriorating because of age and weather. He says there are some louvers on the main sails that are decaying and need to be replaced. Once replaced, there is a bit of painting that will need to happen. The museum has budgeted $25,000 for this work.

The second project involves painting the old colony worship house.

"It is badly in need of a new paint job," notes Dyck.

He guesses once they scrape off the old paint, they will probably spot a few rotten boards needing to be replaced. This project has a price tag of $13,800.

Dyck explains the museum was eligible to apply for a $15,000 grant and was awarded $10,000. The remaining funds will come from the "Foundations For A Strong Future" campaign.

"Things are moving along pretty much according to plan," explains Dyck. "The fact that we got a little less than we had asked for, doesn't really surprise us and I don't think will be a giant obstacle. I think the community will come forward and provide that support."

Dyck says work on the projects might start in the next couple of weeks. However, he says if it could threaten interruption of Pioneer Days, then the work will be postponed. Dyck says he is confident the work will be completed before the end of the season.
