A weekly moms group focuses on breastfeeding support. Family Doctor and Coordinator Aleesha Gillette says they have been meeting since May and moms have mentioned how valuable they find the group.

"I remember when I was an eight week new Mom and needing the support myself and wanting to find it," says mom Nicole Ryan when asked why she finds this group beneficial. "I didn't know where to go and wanted breastfeeding support specifically. So I think what's been so beneficial about this group is that we have started it so other women who are looking for the same thing can find it."

Ryan says she feels the most important thing she has learned from the group is that breastfeeding doesn't need to be all or nothing and it depends on the mom and her baby.

"We would tell her to come to our group to hear that she's not the only one that has gone through that (difficulties while trying to breastfeed) and has gotten through it and that there is hope," notes Gillette when asked about new moms who are struggling to breastfeed. "I think they can see a lot of hope here and they can see a lot of common ground with other moms going through the same things. One of our real goals is to connect them with the supports they need. So if she's having that kind of trouble she needs hands-on help from a lactation consultant or a public health nurse."

Gillette adds attendance is around ten moms per week along with their babies and other moms are welcome to come and join the group at the Steinbach Family Resource Centre on Thursday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:00. She says there have been a couple pregnant women who have come to connect with the group and then later they know where to go for breastfeeding support.

Last week was National Breastfeeding Week. Public Health Nurse and Lactation Consultant Carmel Wiebe says it's a great time to get the word out about breastfeeding support. Wiebe notes the best thing about breastfeeding is that a moms breast milk is made specifically for her baby adding that is an empowering thing for a women, to know she can give her baby exactly the right food every day.
