The Niverville Fire Department was called to a gas leak at a house on Third Street South at around 6pm Wednesday evening.

Deputy Fire Chief Brad Wasilinchuk says a drilling rig that was putting in piles for a home addition hit a gas line. He notes there appears to have been two gas lines and while one was marked it seems the other was not.

“Basically we evacuated a number of houses to the east and to the west and just to the south of the affected home and waited until hydro could get a backhoe in to dig down to cut the line off.”

Wasilinchuk says though it may be annoying for neighbours to be evacuated, it is a precaution they take for the every resident's safety.
