The City of Steinbach has been working on making the downtown area more user friendly.

The City's Head Engineer Phil Kalyta says, “Part of the design or concept with the new curling rink and the plaza in front of the T.G. Smith Centre and Theatre was to make it more pedestrian friendly and make it more of a focal point.”

“In order to make the area near the arena more pedestrian friendly, and to add some decorative features on both sides of Lumber, the portion of Lumber between the Main Street back lane going to the Steinbach Credit Union and Elmdale Street has been converted to a one way towards the arena.”

Kalyta says that should help improve the flow of traffic to and from the arena when there is a big event happening at the complex. “The main entry way to get there would be from Main Street to Lumber Ave. and then on to the arena. When the event is over, traffic would go to either Reimer Ave. or Barkman Ave. and make their way out of the downtown area.”

When you travel on Elmdale Street you will see signs posted saying 'No Entry' onto Lumber Ave., and a no right turn sign from Elmdale Street to Lumber Ave.

According to Kalyta, the biggest change is that there is parking on the Legion Hall side of the street. “I think we will achieve the goal of having people wanting to be there and making it pedestrian friendly, and that's what the architects came up with. The transportation engineers blended in the traffic flow into it, and it's a good solution for the area.”
