The August Long Weekend officially kicked off Friday morning in Steinbach with the 48th running of the Pioneer Days Parade.

Mike Fast with Steinbach Chamber of Commerce says even though there is a lot of street construction happening throughout the city, the parade went very well.

"We'd like to thank everybody for being patient with us on that front," says Fast. "We had a wonderful day, beautiful day."

This year's parade featured more than 150 entries, which, according to Fast, is ahead of last year's total. He notes it was impressive to see the floats that were designed this year. Fast adds the community spirit for this event is wonderful.

The theme for 2016 was "Our Community. Our Responsibility. Think Green!" to celebrate environmental awareness and initiatives in our region.

As has been the case in past years, the Chamber handed out awards to six entries. They are as follows:

Best Animal Award - Coffee Culture

Best Theme Award - Canadian Tire

Cultural Diversity Award - Eastman Immigrant Services

Best Historical Entry - Christies Boutique

Best Antique Entry - M&J Backhoe

Judge's Choice Award - Steinbach Dodge
