Monday will mark the 9th annual Louis Riel Day in Manitoba. The holiday started in 2008, after the Manitoba Government decided there was too long a stretch between New Year's Day and Good Friday.

Dolly Doerksen is Executive Assistant for Steinbach Chamber of Commerce. She says Louis Riel Day is a stat or general holiday in Manitoba. It will run similar to Sundays in Steinbach, which means most businesses will be closed and it will be a quiet day for the retail industry.

"It's a great opportunity to spend time with your friends and family," she says.

Doerksen says restaurants, gas stations and convenience stores will be open Monday but almost everything else will be closed. However, the exception is Shoppers Drug Mart, which under the Sunday and Holiday Shopping Hours Act is allowed to be open from 8am to Midnight.

The Steinbach Aquatic Centre and Jake Epp Library will also both be closed Monday.
