Staff and campers heading to Red Rock Bible Camp are being informed that a road washout will result in a longer drive from the Steinbach area.

Heavy rains over the weekend caused a washout along Provincial Road 307, near Highway 44. Executive Director Kim Coursey says that means access to the camp from that direction is no longer possible.

"We're advising parents who are driving their children to camp the following week or so, that they have to go north and go through Seven Sisters and come in kind of the back way to camp," says Coursey.

He guesses the detour might add thirty minutes to the drive.

Coursey says if someone were to drive to the 307 washout and realize the road is closed, it would result in a lot of extra driving. That is why they are also informing vendors who are delivering groceries throughout the summer and also the company responsible for busing kids to camp.

According to Coursey, the province has provided no indication as to when repairs might be completed. He notes that makes it more difficult to plan for the summer and says they almost have to assume the road will be out of service all summer.

Counsellor training began Tuesday and the first campers are due to arrive July 4th. Coursey says they run eight weeks of camp and right now are just over 90% full. Each week holds 96 campers.

Meanwhile, Coursey says from what he's learned, the weekend rain did no damage to the camp.
