Steinbach city council is dealing with the delicate subject of the amount the mayor and councillors get paid for their services. Mayor Chris Goertzen says council has suggested setting up a committee to review what they are paid compared to other communities. he notes that comparison is more difficult than it may seem.

"It's more complicated than just looking at simple numbers. Council members don't get paid per meeting like many other communities do, they get paid a flat fee and so it's sometimes hard to make a distinct determination how they stack up with others. But, in general, they are modestly paid. Council members continue to enjoy serving the community and yet we want to make sure that we have an indemnity by-law that allows for good council members to continue to run and be elected to council."

According to the city's website, Mayor Chris Goertzen currently receives $31,000 per year, Deputy Mayor John Fehr gets $14,000 and councillors get $12,000 each.

Goertzen says there will be some preliminary work done by the administration and his office and then consideration will be given to setting up a review committee.

"We will look forward to seeing that come to fruition over the next month. Council members do put a lot of time and effort into their jobs. We want to make sure they are compensated appropriately and yet not excessively."
