The Steinbach Community Garage Sale kicks off Saturday morning in the T.G. Smith Centre.

Jason Peters of Steinbach Parks and Recreation says the doors open at 9am and it usually gets busy quickly. He notes along the many vendors that set up shop in the arena the City of Steinbach sells all of the bikes that have been lost and stolen in the community and not claimed by their owner.

“Whatever bikes the city has turned into us, whether by the RCMP or bikes that get found around town that aren't claimed, we take them here to our compound and then tag them and store them. Then people have the opportunity to go claim their bikes. Any bikes that don't get picked up for six months, we then put on sale, and we do that at our community garage sale every spring.”

Peters says this year they have around 70 bikes for sale which is a quite a few more than last year. He notes many of the bikes need repair but every now and then there is a treasure. He adds the nicer bikes are sold with a silent auction.

“Anything that is priced under $20 will be cash and carry. Those bikes will need a little bit of work. The bikes that are in a little better shape we do an open bidding process, so it will be an opportunity to take a look at the bike, you come to the front at the table, you write your bid down.”

Peters says you can come back and bid as many times as you want before 12pm. The highest bidders are awarded the bikes they bid on at noon. He notes all of the money from the bike sale will go to recreational programs throughout the year in Steinbach.
