The City of Steinbach is considering whether to fog for mosquitoes. Russ Dyck, head of Parks and Recreation, says the city's fogging by-law requires 300 mosquitoes per trap per day for consecutive days. He adds the last count was over 300 and they are waiting for one more count before making a decision.

"We're considering that but it's not something we'd do lightly. We haven't sprayed in the past and there are pros and cons. Yes, it does get rid of mosquitoes for a few days, but really that's all it does, for three or four days. And it does affect all other insects, unfortunately, as well and we have a couple of beekeepers within the city limits or on the buffer so we need to be considerate of that as well and give them fair notice if we should decide to fog."

Dyck says they will make a decision on fogging within the coming days.

"We'll monitor the traps for the next few days and see what the trend is. We're getting rain every couple of days so that doesn't help and the hot weather and so forth. In past years, we've had numbers peak at times and then a few days later they go back down. So we'll monitor it here for a few days to see what happens and go from there."

He notes, they have started to see a few Culex Tarsalis mosquitoes in the traps. Those are the ones capable of carrying West Nile virus. So, far none of the mosquitoes has tested positive for the virus.
