The Steinbach Fire Department was called to a bale fire near the intersection of Road 32E and Road 34N southwest of Steinbach just after 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

Fire Chief Kel Toews says when the fire department arrived they found about a dozen separate piles of large round bales on fire. He notes all of the bales are on green fields and they do not expect the fire to spread.

“We will probably let the bales just burn themselves out like I said, they are on green fields. We could spend days and thousands of dollars putting this out so we will let them burn and have the farmer monitor the situation.”

Toews says they have contacted the owner of the bales and will continue to investigate. He notes at this time it is unsure what caused the bales to burn.
