It's Canada Day and there will be an all day party in Steinbach to celebrate the event. Heather Chambers Ewen, a spokesperson for the City of Steinbach, says the daytime festivities take place at Mennonite Heritage Village. The gates open at 10:00 a.m. and admission is free. She notes there will be a special flag raising at 1:00 p.m. followed by the serving of birthday cake. Chambers Ewen says evening events will happen at the soccer park.

"After a full day of activities at MHV, we recommend that families come on out to the Steinbach Soccer Park where we're going to have a great evening of music that starts 8:00 p.m. We have a DJ who will kick things off and then we're going to be giving out cupcakes and lots of free glow sticks and other freebies to everyone who comes out and, of course, the fireworks finale is starting at about 10:45 p.m."

Archangel Fireworks will handle the fireworks display again this year. Spokesperson Candice Mitchell says they have designed a special display for Steinbach that incorporates the latest innovations.

"The technology behind it is the same that it's been for hundreds of years as far as shell-building goes. But what we try to do is all about how we use the fireworks in conjunction with each other. So we're always pushing the boundaries as far as design goes and trying different things. The designer of the show is a big fan of noise which I know the public is as well so I suspect we're going to make a little bit of a ruckus in Steinbach this weekend."

Mitchell says there will be thousands of concussive blasts during the 15-20 minute show.

Vita is also hosting its annual Canada festival today and tomorrow including musical entertainment, a rodeo, baseball tournament and fireworks display.
