The City of Steinbach has spent $80,000.00 on a new weigh scale for the landfill site. Eldon Wallman, head of the Solid Waste department, says the old scale was installed 20 years ago and was at the end of its service life. He notes the scale is getting ever more use because the landfill is accepting garbage from a number of surrounding municipalities.

"Percentage-wise, Steinbach actually consumes about 43% of the landfill. The rest comes from everyone around us, all our good neighbours, the municipalities around us. We're the only regional Class 1 site anywhere around here so we go halfway to the Ontario border and almost to the U.S. border right now. So we do consume a fairly large area."

Wallman says the old weigh scale had handled 700,000 cycles of vehicles coming and going and was simply worn out. He notes the new scale brings with it up to date electronics and better durability.

"It's a lot more user-friendly, easier to service by far and it will deal with all the wear and tear. Our winter use is especially hard with all the salt falling of the vehicles. This one is particularly built to handle that much better than the old one."

The new scale is installed.
