Farmers here in the southeast were able to get a good start on the soybean harvest last week. Kevin Peters of HerbSigWil Farms, west of Steinbach, says it wasn't too bad despite all the rain in recent weeks.

"We had four good days until Friday night. There is lots of moisture in the ground. There are definitely some soft spots. It was a little tough going at times but we were able to get some crop off."

Peters says they have about 30% of their soybeans in the bin and have had yields in the range of 40 bushels per acre and up.

Meanwhile, Ken Krahn at Niverville says they started into soybeans late last week.

"We just started Thursday and Friday and were quite surprised at the yields. The yields are up there; some fields over 60 (bushels per acre) and some in the mid-40s so there seems to be a lot of potential there, especially for areas that didn't get too much rain."

Both Krahn and Peters say they hope to resume the harvest this week before moving on to corn. Peters says corn should be ready in a couple of weeks.

"I heard a neighbour tried a sample the other day and it was still well over 30% (moisture) but we're working our way down."

Krahn says it looks like corn yields will be very good.

"Because the beans were showing us good potential, I think the corn has a lot of potential as well. It looks like there's a lot of corn out there."
