Shayla Dueck is 12 years old and joined us on the AM1250 Morning Show to share her Great-Grandfather's story. It was a 4H project that motivated her to put this all together and we heard the story this morning.

Shayla's Great Grandfather was James Paul Moir and in 1934, at the age of 18, he joined the Golden Highlanders. He was posted to Singapore in 1937. He has his friends, no doubt, heard of Hitler's rise to power but had no idea of the danger much closer to where they were stationed. Once he was taken prisoner on February 15, 1942, his family in Scotland thought he was dead. The story is that they didn't know he was alive until he walked up to the door after the war ended.

Now, conditions in the prisoner of war camps were bad. The prisoners had shelter but they were open sided buildings. 25% of the prisoners died of disease, over work or starvation. Even seriously ill prisoners were expected to work. There was little food or medical supplies for any of the prisoners.

Shayla shared that she feels good that her Great Grandfather was even willing to sacrifice his life to fight for our freedom. So, as we take time to remember on Saturday, November 11th - perhaps Shayla's story will make it a little more real to us.

Remembrance Day -- lest we forget.
