The Hanover Fire Department responded to a call in Blumenort late Wednesday afternoon, after 911 dispatched them to a possible structure fire.

Fire Chief Paul Wiebe says their crews were called out just after 5 pm to a brand new eight suite apartment building along Edgemont Place.

"It was not yet occupied but one upstairs suite had smoke and fire coming from it," explains Wiebe. "Our crews set up, made a quick entry, encountered heavy smoke, very little fire."

Wiebe says crews found the smoke and fire coming from the kitchen area and extinguished the blaze.

He notes the Office of the Fire Commissioner is investigating and it appears the fire may have started in an appliance. Wiebe gives a damage estimate of about $50,000, noting the suite is fully insured.

"The fire suite will definitely need some repairs," he says. "The other suites were not damaged at all and they should be able to be occupied."

Crews were on scene for just over three hours.

Wiebe says there were no injuries.
