The bake sale and fundraiser for Ukrainian refugees Saturday morning was a resounding success.

Melvin Kachur from Friends of Ukraine - Canada says the fundraiser began at 9 AM at the Clearspring Centre.

“It was overwhelming right from the start, the get-go. We had big line-ups, and everybody bought what they wanted, some delicacies for Easter, we had some crafts for sale there and an author selling his book and there was a lady from Vita selling Pysanka Easter Eggs and she did very well.”

Kachur notes “the people in Steinbach and area rose up to the occasion and helped raise funds for the Ukrainian refugees in the Steinbach area. Everything sold out in a few hours time.” He adds “ I don’t think we could have done any better.”

In addition to all of that, Kachur says they served free borscht and coffee, did a silent auction, held a 50/50 draw and did some gospel singing.

“It is not fully finalized but we did very well. I would say that the [Ukrainian refugee] community will receive over $5,000.”

Kachur says all of the funds will be used to help supply Ukrainian refugees with furniture and other necessary goods.

“I’d like to thank the Clearspring Mall for letting us use their facility and thank you to all of the people that donated money and bought our food products and helped us with the 50/50 draw and the silent auction. We would like to give a sincere thank you to everybody.”

Kachur says it was great to see everyone show up in solidarity with Ukraine.
