A woman from the Rural Municipality of Hanover faces charges under the Highway Traffic Act, in connection to an aggravated assault in Grand Marais.

On Friday, at approximately 11:20 pm, Selkirk RCMP responded to a serious assault involving a firearm at a business on Parkview Avenue in Grand Marais. According to police, a group of people attended a local business, assaulted an employee and threatened him and others with a firearm.

The suspects fled the business in a vehicle at a high rate of speed and crashed into a ditch on Parkview Avenue. A bystander at the scene of the collision approached the vehicle and was assaulted and threatened by the suspects. A second vehicle showed up, picked up the suspects and fled towards Winnipeg.

Witnesses provided a description and license plate of the suspect vehicle and officers located the vehicle going south on Highway 59 towards Winnipeg. Officers initiated a traffic stop, however, the vehicle refused to stop and continued to drive erratically and at a high rate of speed into Winnipeg. Winnipeg Police Service was advised and with the assistance of Air-1, the suspect vehicle was tracked to a location in the Maples area of the city. Seven occupants were arrested without incident.

The victim and employee of the business, a 51-year-old male from Grand Marais, is currently in hospital with serious injuries.

The second victim, the bystander at the scene of the collision, a 46-year-old male from the RM of Bifrost, suffered minor injuries and did not require medical attention.

A 20-year-old female from the RM of Hanover is facing charges under the Highway Traffic Act of careless driving and permitting an unauthorized person to drive.

Twenty-four-year-old Ethan Jones from the RM of Portage La Prairie has been charged with:

  • aggravated assault
  • two counts of pointing a firearm
  • unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • two counts of uttering threats
  • carrying a weapon in public
  • carrying a concealed weapon
  • flight from a police officer
  • dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited
  • operation of a motor vehicle while impaired

Jones was remanded in custody.

A 22-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing charges of aggravated assault and assault causing bodily harm. A 24-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing a charge of aggravated assault. Both of these individuals were released on conditions and are scheduled to appear in court on September 16, 2022.
