According to Statistics Canada, the Indigenous population is growing throughout almost all of southeastern Manitoba. 

Data released Wednesday from the 2021 Census, shows there are 1,755 Indigenous people living in Steinbach, making up 9.9 per cent of the total population. In the 2016 Census, there were 1,055 Indigenous people living in Steinbach, or about 6.7 per cent of the population.

The municipality in the southeast with the highest percentage of Indigenous residents is De Salaberry. There are 1,105 Indigenous people living in that municipality, making up 28.2 per cent of the total population. That is up from 23.3 per cent in the previous Census.

The only municipality in southeastern Manitoba that saw its percentage of Indigenous population drop in the last five years was the Rural Municipality of Piney. In the 2021 Census, there were 395 Indigenous people living in Piney, making up 21.4 per cent of the population. That is down from 26.4 per cent in the 2016 Census. 

Here is a list of other municipalities in southeastern Manitoba:

  • Town of Ste. Anne has 810 Indigenous residents for 28.0 per cent of the population, up from 23.4 per cent in 2016.
  • St. Pierre has 360 Indigenous residents for 27.6 per cent of the population, up from 26.5 per cent in 2016.
  • RM of Ste. Anne has 1,120 Indigenous residents for 20.1 per cent of the population, up from 17.1 per cent in 2016.
  • Ritchot has 1,360 Indigenous residents for 18.2 per cent of the population, up from 16.2 per cent in 2016.
  • Tache has 2,105 Indigenous residents for 17.7 per cent of the population, up from 16.2 per cent in 2016.
  • La Broquerie has 1,185 Indigenous residents for 17.6 per cent of the population, up from 15.1 per cent in 2016.
  • Niverville has 740 Indigenous residents for 12.4 per cent of the population, up from 11.3 per cent in 2016.
  • Stuartburn has 200 Indigenous residents for 11.6 per cent of the population, up from 7.6 per cent in 2016.
  • Emerson-Franklin has 280 Indigenous residents for 11.5 per cent of the population, up from 10.3 per cent in 2016.
  • Hanover has 1,410 Indigenous residents for 8.2 per cent of the population, up from 6.3 per cent in 2016.
