One year after the devastating fire, 247 Main Street hits the market

247 Main Street in Steinbach, the former site of Penner Foods, Stylerite, a strip mall, and last year’s devastating fire, is now for sale. 

Keith Unger with RE/MAX Performance Realty has been tasked with selling the property. He notes it is a very unique piece of land. 

“To get a chunk of land that large on Main Street that has frontage on three sides is pretty hard to do. The last time we've seen something like that might be when they assembled the land for the SCU and that was a massive undertaking, and it definitely changed the landscape of Steinbach and Main Street. So, we're excited to see what might come to that site.” 

Ever since the fire July 10th 2023, the empty lot has been the subject of much speculation. With so much history attached to this downtown property, Unger says he feels extremely honoured to be a part of this sale. 

“I still call it Stylerite, some people call it Penner Foods. We can figure out how old you are depending on the business that you named that site after.” 

Most recently the property was home to Janzens Paint and Decorating, Best West Pet Foods, H&R Block, and Steinbach’s Flooring Canada

So, what will go in there next? 

Being downtown with access to three separate streets and within walking distance of a brand new event centre, Unger says there are so many interesting possibilities. 

“I think it's fairly wide open. We love the idea of mixed-use. I know Steinbach would encourage mixed-use in a location like that which might include apartments or condos and commercial. That may be a good location for a hotel, if Steinbach has the capacity for more. There's a lot to think about and it's a great blank canvas for somebody to start dreaming.” 

Unger says there has already been interest from a few groups in the Steinbach area and a number of groups outside of the region.
