As soon as the gates opened Friday morning at Mennonite Heritage Village, people started showing up for Canada Day celebrations.

Volunteers greeted visitors at the gates, offering information and free admission wristbands. In all corners of the museum grounds, you could find volunteers bustling around to make sure there would be ample food and activities.

Robert Goertzen says the museum is always a place that welcomes everyone from every country.

He points out their staff and volunteers enjoy hosting events, adding that it is great to be able to invite the public to big celebrations like Canada Day festivities.

The rest of the season will include a number of special events such as a car show, summer camps and demonstrations.

The Canada Day celebration included a flag-raising ceremony at the museum.

Festivities will shift to the Steinbach soccer park for the evening with a grand display of fireworks.
