Many of the seniors in our community don’t have family in the area and will be spending their Christmas alone.

Stockings for Seniors spreads the Christmas spirit to these people during the holidays.

The program started at the beginning of the pandemic when Pat Porter realized people weren't going to be able to celebrate Christmas with family.

Audrey Harder from Pat Porter says they wanted to make sure everyone is able to celebrate Christmas.

“It's been a really good experience for us and for the community.”

It's recommended to order a stocking for someone you have in mind or family in the area that you won’t be able to see.

“That way you can actually keep that connection, and you can even e-mail us a nice note or something to put in it and we will make sure that they get that.”

There are two different packages available. Package A is $25 and it has two Meals on Wheels gift certificates, and one stocking filled up with goodies.

Then there is the larger $40 Package B, which is four Meals on Wheels gift certificates and two stockings filled with goodies.

Goodies typically range from snacks like fruit, chocolate, and nuts, to Christmas-themed decorations and ornaments.

Harder says they always need volunteers, especially for organizing all the items into stockings.

“Once we buy all the stuff, putting it together takes a lot of time and we want to make sure it's nice,” she says. “It's about making sure we have the right stuff in them, so we do need people to do that.”

You can donate items for the hampers, volunteer to organize items in stockings, or help deliver stockings.

"I had a lot of fun when I've done it! Let us know and we can set it up so that you get to deliver them, bring them to people, and see the joy they experience.”

To register someone for a stocking, phone 204-320-4600, or visit their website.

They plan to deliver the stockings on December 19th, 20th, and if needed, the 21st.

December 14th is the deadline for registering and volunteering.

They don't deliver Meals on Wheels outside of Steinbach and Grunthal, so if you don't live in either community you will need to pick up your meals.

The Meals on Wheels food is different depending on the day. The menu is on their website.
