The Steinbach Regional Secondary School won the Morris Mavericks Pre-Season High School Hockey Tournament. The Sabres defeated Lord Selkirk 3-1 in the championship game Sunday. Griffin Plett, Dominic Rooney and Chase Bueckert did the goal scoring for the SRSS.


The Eastman Selects gave up four third period goals and lost 6-1 to the Winnipeg Ice. Ava Boily scored the lone goal for the Selects who face the Central Plains Capitals on Saturday in Niverville.


The Steinbach Pistons scored three goals in the first period and added three more in the second en route to an 8-1 victory over the Dauphin Kings at the T.G. Smith Centre. Nate Goodbrandson had a hat trick for the Pistons while singles went to Leo Chambers, Daniel O’Neill, Ty Paisley, Davis Fry and Hunter Degelman.


Brendan Kerr and Josh Paulhus scored two goals each in the Niverville Nighthawks 6-3 victory over the Winnipeg Freeze. Zak Kennett and Carter Spirig also scored for the Nighthawks who are riding a three-game winning streak.


The Brandon Wheat Kings begin their season high eight-game road trip today as they face the Hitmen in Calgary. The Wheat Kings went 1-2-1 on their season opening four-game homestand.


The Winnipeg Jets have placed forward Jansen Harkins on waivers for purposes of assignment to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose. The 25-year-old Cleveland native was selected by Winnipeg in the second round of the 2015 NHL draft. The Jets, who have 24 players on their roster, have to be down to 23 by Tuesday. Winnipeg will open the 2022-23 season Friday against the New York Rangers at Canada Life Centre.


Gabrielle Roy defeated Linden Christian 25-21, 27-25 in the final of the John Taylor Piper Classic varsity boys volleyball tournament.
