The Niverville Panthers varsity girls and varsity boys high school volleyball tournaments were held this past weekend. The host Panthers defeated the Hamiota Huskies 25-16, 25-14 in the girls final. The Landmark 96’ers swept the Lorette Scorpions 25-15, 25-14 in the boys final. Gabrielle Roy Les Roys defeated the Kelvin Clippers 15-25, 25-19, 15-13 in the final of the Tec-Voc varsity girls volleyball tournament. 


The Steinbach Huskies and Springfield Xtreme were winners in the HTJHL Sunday night. Ian Friesen, Brandon Thiessen and Mason Martens scored two goals each as Steinbach downed Red River 9-2. Ethan Unger, Rylen Koop and Seth Doerksen also scored for the Huskies who improved to 3-0 on the season. Andrew Dyck and Braden Hildebrand replied for the Mudbugs. Evan Veinot had a goal and an assist as Springfield edged Macdonald 4-3. Jacob DaSilva, Ky Stewart and Brayden Kizlik also scored for the Xtreme. Coltyn Plaitin had a pair of goals for the Swarm. The other went to Adam Peters.


The Niverville Nighthawks scored five third period goals en route to an 8-3 victory over the Winnipeg Blues. Brendan Bottem had a pair of goals for the Nighthawks while the rest went to Gavin Gunderson, Ethan Kelly, Eric Martin, Carter Spirig, Merik Boles and Desmond Johnson. 


The Eastman Selects dropped a 4-2 decision to the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League leading Brandon Wheat Kings. Ryder McLure and Roan Coe did the goal scoring for the Selects. Eastman netminder Francois Gagnon faced 51 shots including 22 in the second period. The 11-0 Wheat Kings lead 2-1 after the first period and extended their lead to 3-1 when Dylan Schrader scored his second goal of the game just 21 seconds into the middle frame. 


The Eastman Selects lost 3-2 in overtime to the Yellowhead Chiefs. Danyel Heppner and Pandora Turcotte scored in regulation for the Selects. Eastman goaltender Orieanna Kennedy made 41 saves. 


The Ste. Anne Aces lost their SEMHL home opener 4-3 in a shootout to the Altona Maroons. Rob Guimond potter the winner for Altona. Tanner Harms, Yvan Pattyn and Braden Purtill did the goal scoring in regulation for the Aces who outshot the Maroons 72-36. 


The Winnipeg Jets three-game road trip came to an end Sunday night. Jack Eichel scored with seven seconds left in overtime to lift the Vegas Golden Knights past Winnipeg 2-1. Adam Lowry scored 13 seconds into the third period to give the Jets a 1-0 lead. Mark Stone got the equalizer seven minutes later. Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck made 46 saves. The Jets begin a three-game homestand Thursday when they face the Montreal Canadiens. 


Leon Gawanke and Cole Maier scored 15 seconds apart in the second period as the Manitoba Moose downed the Iowa Wild 4-1 at Canada Life Centre. Maier finished the game with a pair of goals. Wyatt Bongiovanni also scored for Manitoba.  Arvid Holm made 33 saves.


Dayna Wahl of the Altona Curling Club and Jace Freeman of the Virden Curling Club will compete at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Summerside, Prince Edward Island after winning the Manitoba Trials Sunday at the Heather Curling Club in Winnipeg. Wahl along with third Piper Stoesz, second Anna Marie Ginters and lead Gillian Hildebrand stole two in the eighth end and defeated Shaela Hayward of Carman 6-5. Freeman, with third Elias Huminicki, second Rylan Graham and lead Jack Steski got four in the fifth end en route to a 7-5 victory over Ronan Peterson of the Heather. The Canada Winter Games will be held February 18th - March 5th.
