The Steinbach Pistons gave up four unanswered second period goals and lost 7-3 to the Winkler Flyers at the T.G. Smith Centre. Dalton Andrew had two goals and two assists for the Flyers who cut Steinbach’s lead in their best-of-seven East Division semifinal to three games to two. Dawson Milliken had a pair of goals for the Pistons while the other went to Davis Fry. Game six goes Sunday in Winkler. The Portage Terriers are the first team to advance to round two of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs. The Terriers downed the Niverville Nighthawks 5-1 and took that East semifinal in five games.


The Selkirk Fishermen scored three third period goals and beat the Warriors 4-2 in St. Malo. The Fishermen lead the best-of-seven Capital Region Junior Hockey League final three games to one. Jeremie Collette and Teagan Fillion did the goal scoring for the Warriors. Game five goes tonight in Selkirk.


The Winnipeg Wild are Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League champions for the second year in a row. Aidan Wuerfel scored twice and Marlen Edwards had three assists as the Wild downed the Winnipeg Bruins 7-4 and took the best-of-five final three games to one.


Matthew Savoie scored three times and Ben Zloty had four assists as the Winnipeg Ice downed the Medicine Hat Tigers 5-3 in game one of their best-of-seven WHL Eastern Conference quarterfinal. Game two goes tonight at the Wayne Fleming Arena.


Kyle Connor, Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele scored first period goals in the Winnipeg Jets 6-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Canada Life Centre. Dylan DeMelo, Nino Niederreiter and Nikolaj Ehlers also scored for the Jets who still lead Calgary by two points in the race for the second wildcard in the NHL’s Western Conference. The Flames edged Vancouver 5-4 in overtime. Winnipeg and Calgary both have six games left.


The playoffs take place today at the 2023 Western Canadian Ringette Championships in Winnipeg. The Eastman Heat will face B.C. in U19 A Division semifinal. The winner will take on Alberta in the gold medal game. The Eastman Heat will meet the host Southwest Winnipeg Fury in the U16 A fourth place game. Manitoba will face Saskatchewan in the U14 AA semifinals and Manitoba will take on Alberta in the Open A Division semifinals. The winner will meet B.C. in the gold medal game.


Jordon McDonald and Jace Freeman have both qualified for the playoffs at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. McDonald has a bye to the semifinals. Freeman will face Landon Rooney of Ontario in the quarterfinals. Zoey Terrick, who is 6-1 and has clinched a playoff spot, will play her final round robin game against Myla Plett of Alberta who is 7-0. Grace Beaudry is 4-3 and will meet Mackenzie Mitchell of Newfoundland & Labrador who is 7-0.


Canada's Brad Gushue will play a pair of games on day one of the 2023 World Men's Curling Championship in Ottawa. Gushue, Mark Nichols, E.J. Harnden and Geoff Walker will face Switzerland’s Benoit Schwarz today at 1 p.m. and Joel Retornaz of Italy at 6 p.m.
