Ryder Chabot, Ty Brewster, Jager Bueckert and Terran Perreault of Steinbach Regional finished second at the Provincial High School Golf Championships Friday at the Pleasant Valley golf course in Belmont. Chabot (75), Brewster (80), Bueckert (81) and Perreault (100) were tied with Bryson Harder, Payne Wood, Liam Comaskey and Gavin Carver of the St. Paul’s Crusaders with a 236 total. The Crusaders won the provincial championship on a countback. Jeri Lafleche, Jewel Lafleche, Erin Nowicki and Dayna Marriott of College Jeanne-Sauve captured the provincial girls title.
Steinbach Regional dropped a 28-12 decision to the Grant Park Pirates at the Fort Garry Lions Field. SRSS quarterback Toby Plett threw two touchdown passes to Zane Friesen. Jackson Gamaldo had four tackles and a quarterback sack for the Sabres who have a 2-2 record in the Winnipeg High School Football League’s AAAA Conference’s South East Division. Steinbach Regional’s next game is Thursday, October 5th against the Kelvin Clippers at A.D. Penner Park.
The Steinbach Pistons suffered their first loss of the season Friday night. Trent Penner scored twice as the Winkler Flyers downed Steinbach 4-2 at the HyLife Centre in La Broquerie. Kirk Mullen and Brett Kaiser did the goal scoring for the Pistons who had won their first three games.
The Eastman Selects play their season opener against the defending Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League champion Winnipeg Wild today (3:45 p.m.) at Hockey for All Centre.
The Brandon Wheat Kings fell 5-2 to the Warriors in Moose Jaw. Jayden Wiens and Nolan Flamand did the goal scoring for the Wheat Kings. Brandon netminder Carson Bjarnason made 31 saves in his season debut after returning from Philadelphia Flyers training camp.
The Winnipeg Jets lost 3-1 to the Senators in Ottawa. Jansen Harkins had the lone goal for the Jets who will play their fifth of six exhibition games Monday when they meet the Flames in Calgary.
Sergio Castillo kicked six field goals and Brady Oliveira ran for 169 yards and caught a touchdown pass from Zach Collaros in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 31-21 victory over the Toronto Argonauts at IG Field. The Bombers and B.C. Lions are 11-4 and tied for first place in the CFL West. The Lions, who host Winnipeg next Friday, beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 33-26.
Matt Dunstone will face Mike McEwen and Reid Carruthers will meet Brad Gushue in the men’s Final 4 at the 2023 PointsBet Invitational in Oakville, Ontario. Kerri Einarson will take on Kaitlyn Lawes and Rachel Homan will meet Christina Black in the women’s Final 4. Gushue defeated Ryan Wiebe 8-4 and Black eliminated Jennifer Jones 9-6 in the Elite 8.
