Canada will face Sweden in the quarterfinals at the 2022 World Women's Hockey Championship Thursday in Herning, Denmark. Team Canada gave up five unanswered goals and lost its final preliminary round game 5-2 to the United States. Sarah Fillier and Ella Shelton scored for the Canadians who lead 2-0 after the first period. Emerance Maschmeyer made 33 saves. The Americans finished first in Group A with a 4-0 record. Canada was second at 3-1.
The Manitoba Junior Hockey League's newest franchise will play its first ever exhibition game tonight. The Niverville Nighthawks will meet the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Weyburn Red Wings in Souris. The Steinbach Pistons, who begin main camp on Saturday, will play their first of four preseason games on Labour Day Monday against the Nighthawks in Niverville.
Leeanne Richardson of Indian Mountain, New Brunswick has the lead after round one of the Canadian Senior Women's Golf Championship at Breezy Bend. Richardson was even par 72 Tuesday and is one shot ahead of Jackie Little of Proctor, BC. Manitoba champion Rhonda Orr of Southwood was seven-over par 79 and is in a tie for 12th place. Richardson also leads the Canadian Women's Mid-Amateur Championship by one shot over Little, Nonie Marler of Vancouver and Christina Spence Proteau of Port Alberni. Hannah Diamond of St. Charles and Veronica van der Meer of Winnipeg were 79. Charmaine Mackid of Breezy Bend was 80.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes are on a four-game losing streak. The Kansas City Monarchs held on for a 3-2 victory over the Fish Tuesday night at Shaw Park. Reggie Pruitt Jr. slugged a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut the Monarchs lead to 3-2. Kansas City closer James McGrane retired the next two batters to earn his 17th save of the season. Ian Sagdal hit a long drive to right-centre that was caught by Mallex Smith on the warning track for the final out.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed American linebacker DeJuan Cooper and American receiver Jaivon Heiligh to the practice roster. Cooper joins the Blue Bombers after a five-year college career in which the first four years took place at Monmouth University. Hiis final season was spent with the South Dakota Coyotes. The linebacker appeared in 53 games and registered 143 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and an interception. Heiligh joins the Blue Bombers after a four-year college career with Coastal Carolina. During that time, he appeared in 45 games and amassed 191 receptions, 2,825 yards, and 22 touchdowns. The wide receiver was twice named to the First Team All-Sun Belt in 2020 and 2021. Heiligh set a Cure Bowl record by hauling in 13 catches and left Coastal Carolina as the programs leading receiver in yards and receptions. Heiligh spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals during their 2022 training camp.
