Craig Patton scored the go-ahead goal at 12:38 of the third period and Troy Beauchemin added an insurance marker on the power play with 2:56 remaining as the Lorette Comets defeated the Red River Mudbugs 4-2 in St. Jean. Beauchemin had pair of goals on the night while Blake Noble also scored for the Comets who moved within two points of the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League leading Springfield Xtreme. Lorette has a game in hand on Springfield. The Comets and Xtreme meet Friday night in Ile des Chenes. Andrew Dyck and Bryson Loewen did the goal scoring for the Mudbugs.

 

The Winnipeg Ice continue to hold down top spot in the Canadian Hockey League's Top 10 rankings. The Ice have won three of four January outings, all coming on the road. Among the leaders for the club has been new recruit Jack Finley, the veteran centre and Tampa Bay Lightning draftee who since arriving in the Manitoba capital has picked up five goals and six assists through 10 appearances that includes a team-leading six points through four January contests. The Ice (29-6-2) own the best record in the Western Hockey League and lead the Eastern Conference by three points over the Edmonton Oil Kings who are second in the Top 10 rankings.

 

The Grey Cup champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers have added American defensive back Donovan Olumba to its roster. The 26-year-old Nashville native, who played college football at Portland State University, was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent after the 2018 NFL Draft. Olumba spent time on the Dallas and Cleveland Browns practice squads.
