A cell guard at the Steinbach RCMP detachment was attacked by a prisoner earlier this week.

On Sunday at approximately 4 pm, the 75-year-old male guard was taking a beverage to a prisoner in a cell. While the guard was handing over the beverage, the prisoner grabbed his arm and pulled it forcefully into the cell through the opening used to provide food for prisoners.

According to police, the guard sustained substantial injuries. He was treated and released from hospital.

Police say the prisoner, 20-year-old Chase Paul of Selkirk was not injured. He has been charged with assault causing bodily harm. Paul has been detained on a remand warrant to a mischief charge at the time of the incident and remains in custody.
