Steinbach Regional dropped a 4-2 decision to the Stonewall Rams at Veterans Memorial Sports Complex. Carson Funk and Ryder Chabot did the goal scoring for the Sabres who saw their record fall to 5-7 in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League’s Platinum Promotions Division. Noah Szabo and Grady Hoffman scored power play goals and Leo Chambers had three assists as the Steinbach Pistons defeated the Portage Terriers 6-1 at the HyLife Centre in La Broquerie. Brayden Berg, Brady Ingebritson, Jackson Kostiuk and Kyle Kudrna also scored for the defending Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions who led 3-0 and 4-0 at the period breaks. The Red River Mudbugs beat the St. Clements Gators 14-1 in St. Jean. The Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League leading Mudbugs extended their winning streak to seven games. The Gators are 0-9. The Eastman Selects lost 2-1 in a shootout to the defending Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League champion Winnipeg Ice. Isabella Carriere had the lone goal for the Selects in regulation. Eastman’s Orieanna Kennedy made 38 saves. Jayden Wiens scored the winning goal in the ninth round of the shootout as the Brandon Wheat Kings beat the Moose Jaw Warriors 5-4. Jaxon Jacobson had a pair of goals in regulation for the Wheat Kings who have won four in a row and are 3-0 on their eight-game homestand. Nate Danielson and Brett Hyland also scored for Brandon. Canada West fell 4-1 to the United States in their lone pre-tournament game prior to Sunday’s start of the 2023 World Junior A Hockey Challenge in Truro, Nova Scotia. Winnipeg’s Rylan Brown, who plays for the MJHL’s Niverville Nighthawks, scored the lone goal for Canada West who will face Sweden in their preliminary round opener. The Manitoba Moose gave up three goals in the second period and three more in the third and lost 6-2 to the Calgary Wranglers. Danny Zhilkin and Brad Lambert did the goal scoring for the Moose. Dave Boehmer will face Bruce Korte of Saskatchewan in the semifinals of the Canadian Senior Curling Championships in Vernon, BC. Boehmer, Dale Lott, Sean Bracken and George Hacking finished with an 8-2 record in the championship pool. Joelle Brown had a 5-5 record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
