August 3rd-6th, 2018 was Pioneer Days weekend in Steinbach, and the Mennonite Heritage Village was the place to be.
There were many cool things to check out, including guided tours, demonstrations, barrel train and wagon rides, and entertainment. Acts performing included 5 Acres, Cold Hard Cash, and for the first time at the MHV: The Mega Bot Show featuring Sonny the Robot. Book readings and presentations rounded out the fun.
Fast Air was also out offering $50 helicopter rides for anyone who wanted: the in-the-sky tour provided a breathtaking view of all the beauty Steinbach has to offer.
While it was quite a strong weekend for the MHV with people coming out from all over the province and more, the weather seemed to have a noticeable impact. Barry Dyck, the executive director, made note of it:
"...the first three days; Friday was hot, showers on Saturday...a little bit of threatening of showers on Sunday. Today was perfect, I think people went to the beach."
Still, Dyck highlighted one of his favourite aspects of the weekend: how great it was to see the younger generation out enjoying the village.
"It was good to see lots of kids, all of my grandchildren made it here at some point and had a great time, and those are really really positive things."
It was an incredibly fun weekend, through the hot and the not-so-hot, and it was hard to look in any direction without seeing a smiling face.
