A Spectacular Start to a New Season

Perk up Pianist

Coats and chills were hastily discarded at the door. Energy and conversations buzzed through the lobby, echoing into anxiously awaiting rows of red velvet. Familiar faces caught up on their summer stories; old friends coming together for a delightful new season. The lights went down, and once again the Concert Series had begun.

Lulled by her soothing tone and charming narrative, Sarah Hagen’s “Perk Up Pianist” softly melted a full theatre into an intimate gathering. Intertwining her mesmerizing pieces, sweet stories, and cheeky humor, Sarah invites and entices you into her uniquely wonderful world. With light fingers and a light heart, she regaled with tales of stolen luggage, favourite composers, and how to stay Perked Up on dark days. With a sigh, smile, or sideways glance, she brought the audience right next to her; holding a one-on-one conversation with hundreds at a time.

Too soon it was over, and the audience left wanting more as they headed towards the doors. The theatre emptied; coats and chills returned. As the intimate group spread out into the night, energy and conversations continued to hum, eagerly discussing their return.

Broadway At Its Best

It’s been one week. One week since we shook off the summer dust and fanned out our theatre wings. One week since we drew back the curtains on our 2017-18 Concert Series and watched as five incredible performers took the stage to set the tone for a promisingly breathtaking season. It’s been one week and we still can’t get their spellbinding performances (or toe-tapping songs) out of our heads.

Madeline Hildebrand’s emotional pianism served as the backbone for the evening; smoothly driving us from bouncy 11 o’clock numbers to heartfelt, soulful ballads without skipping a beat.

Wes Rambo’s eager tenor on Miracle of Miracles lulled us into one of the most earnest and honest moments of the night.

Noami Forman immediately wowed us with her powerful lilting soprano, but it was in her rendition of Cain’t Say No that she captured the audience with impeccable comedic timing.

With Shannon Unger ‘s striking mezzo soprano and David Klassen’s rolling baritone, both performers were immediately represented as seasoned players; confident and at ease in their individual pieces. However, it was their performances together that were a delightful surprise, equally in their playful banter and their smooth harmonies.

Of all the golden tones and moments that entranced us all, the most magical spells came when all five performers took the stage together; melting melodies into one seamless sirenic sound. Effortlessly moving between lending pause and belting bravado, this quintet collectively moved expertly and professionally through each note. They filled the air with their music; leaving no room for ego.

The first show of the year, all our expectations for the season, rested heavily on these five performers. The bar was not only set high, it was lifted to the rafters by wondrous voices and thunderous, roaring applause. Through their music, we were transported from nostalgia to despair to hope and back again. We were lifted by our hearts from our seats; soothed through the night by rich undertones and sweet melodies. We were warmed and enticed; eager for more. So here we sit; ready for the chilly, inspired, wonderful season ahead…and it’s only been one week.

Steinbach Fringe Fest - Celebrating Local Talent

Fringe Pic

Rural Manitoba residents are always asking for an artistic community that’s edgy, fresh and fun. Calls for the inspirational ingenuity of a big city festival in our own backyard, while supporting local artists, were answered this winter with the Steinbach Arts Council’s first Fringe Fest.

Taking advantage of the blustery Family Day, SAC brought three hilarious and creative live shows that could be enjoyed by the entire family. With a stage set in their SAC Centre studio, contemporary and classic characters alike shared the limelight to delight audiences of all ages.

In Merry Men, Robin Hood and Prince John shared an action-packed adventure like no other that ended in a revelation that showed their true colours and characters.

Phoebe’s Friends Improv Show reunited us with some of our best Friends who showed us that they can think as fast as they talk as they tackled audience suggestions on the spot.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare provided a fast and furious creatively comic run through the famous author’s entire collection that left our sides hurting and no need to study our literature that weekend.

While the weather may have been frosty, the SAC had the heart of the province in their hands and delivered a delightfully warm and refreshingly energized production. With the fall schedule in the works, the community is sure to have their creative minds and artistic souls fed again and again.Fringe Post Clip

SAC Concert Series Opener a Success! Duo Fortin-Poirier...Pianistic Powerhouses!

The Steinbach Arts Council was thrilled to open their 2016-2017 Concert Series with Duo Fortin-Poirier!

Thanks to Prairie Debut and the SAC Night Out promotion for the Duo Fortin-Poirier - Rhyme or Reason Cafe.

The Duo Fortin-Poirier has been heralded as one of the most promising piano duos of its generation. With an intuitive musicianship, this young duo has an extraordinarily natural partnership that has quickly garnered acclaim. Their concert program titled Mémoires, features works for one piano, four hands from across the classical, tango, and ragtime genres. Exploring the theme of memories, the program weaves between the intensity of Piazzolla's tangos, the lyricism of Rachmaninov, and the liveliness of Samuel Barber. Mémoires is a concert that blends hard-driving rhythm with sweet nostalgia, resonating with audiences who will remember the dynamism of Duo Fortin-Poirier.

July was a Blast! 2017 Summer Arts Day Camps

The Steinbach Arts Council's Summer Arts Day Camps have had wonderful month of July full with busy campers, fun creative activities, energy and community field trips.

Summer Arts Day Camps kicked off the summer with Aloha Summer.  The campers explored Hawaii, blue waters, summer outdoors, sang camp fire songs and much more!  The following camp weeks explored Wild Wild West, Land Before Time and Spy Kid.

Each of the camps included much dance, music, drama, visual arts and recreational activities that were facilitated by the Camp Directors and local guest clinicians.

A few exciting visual arts activities throughout July included a large paper mache bone for Land Before Time, WANTED posters with the country rustic feel for Wild Wild West and Secret Agent offical badges for Spy Kid week.

Dance was brought to the camps by XCOMPANY Steinbach as well as other local clinicians.  The campers participated in Hip Hop, line dancing, freeze dancing and creative movement.

Exciting drama activitities were instructed by Assistant Director Malcolm Roulette (Assistant Director of The Backyard Theatre Company).  Costumes, props, improv and character building were expressed through these activities.

Musical activities and sessions were infused with energy, creativity and unique songs.  Instruments, different styles of music, music learning games and so much more.  Music clinicians visited the camps to play flute, piano, guitar and ukulele.

The campers have been involved in many community field trips some including Golden West Radio, Jake Epp Library, Mennonite Heritage Mueseum, Kidzone, Steinbach Aquatic Pool, Steinbach City Hall, Splash Park, Southwood School, KR Barkman Park.  In August the campers will be visiting more locations within the community.

Great news!  There are camps in August too!  There are still a few spots left to get your camper registered for a camp!  August highlights The Mighty Jungle, Welcome to the Carnival and The Great Outdoors.

Spring Break Out! Camps were a success!  The camps ages 5-8 and 9-12 offered a full week of camp infused with creativity, dance, drama, music, culture, visual arts, fields and so much more!

2016 04 springbreakoutEddie Conrad (far right) with older group of Spring Break Out campers.

Eddie Conrad and Stephanie Funk, Spring Break Out Directors at Steinbach Arts Council said they had lots to keep the kids busy from crafts to karaoke, paper mache, field trips and taking advantage of the nice weather outside.  Field trips included The Jake Epp Library, Steinbach City Hall and a community scavenger hunt.

During the camp, guest clinicians visited the camps to complete a pottery project, accordian playing and drama.

"It's been amazing so far. We've had awesome weather so we could play some games outside and we could eat lunch outside. They loved some activities, especially karaoke and what they call zombie tag, which is basically playing hide-and-seek in the dark here in the basement [of the centre]." Eddy Konrad.

Spring Break Out! Camps were a great way for the children to explore their creativity and simply have have during their spring break.
