Time flies when you're having fun.

And for Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club head professional Brian Guenther time has flown by.

Guenther is celebrating a milestone this season as he begins his 20th year as a CPGA professional.

The 45-year-old spent his first seven years at Falcon Lake and 2017 marks his 13th season as the head pro at the Fly-In.

The Fly-In is the course where Guenther developed his game and fell in love with the sport.

He served as a shop assistant for a year and then in 1993 began a five-year run as an assistant pro under Larry Robinson before moving on to the head professional job at Falcon.

"It's great," said Guenther. "I still love the golf business. Definitely the business itself is struggling a little bit as far as keeping people involved, and the sport itself but the job is amazing. The support I get from members and everyone else is great."

If you add the two together - Guenther and greens superintendent Rob Fast have over 65 years of experience between the two of them when it comes to professional services.

"Rob and his crew have done a great job," said Guenther. "They've got the irrigation system going so we are watering. We've fertilized and everything is greening up real nice. With over 40 years at the golf course, Rob is invaluable to us as far as his work ethic and how he knows the golf course and what to do."

"Greens were good right from the start and the tee boxes are okay," added Guenther. "With the fall last year being so wet, there was lots of standing water and some of those spots that froze in are taking their time coming back but everything is in good shape."

Unfortunately golfers have had to be extra patient this season.

"We opened on Good Friday and we had a decent weekend," Guenther said. "The last weekend in April was also good. In between, obviously Mother Nature. Actually May has been quite cool as well. We're waiting for the weather to turn and let everyone come out."

Numbers were up at the Fly-In last season and Guenther says that trend should continue in 2017.

"Our membership again is strong this year and so is the junior membership so we just keep plugging away. Our course conditions are always good so people enjoy that. Our services are good. If we keep doing that people continue to support."

Junior golfers.

Guenther knows the value of a successful junior program and what it means for the Fly-In.

"We've done a few programs with the juniors and we've had a really good response. Our numbers are up again with the junior program. We're doing groups with the school division. We're getting a lot of activity out here for the juniors."

"It's coming back to the family unit," added Guenther. "Where else can you spend two hours or four hours with your kids and doing the same activity. We all bring our kids to hockey and baseball and swimming lessons and everything else but to actually be a part of the same sport, on the same grounds, at the same time - that's important."
