Garen Nault brought home a pair of gold medals from the 2017 MHSAA Provincial High School Track & Field Championships last weekend at University Stadium on the University of Manitoba campus in south Winnipeg.

The grade 10 student/athlete at Ecole Pointe des Chenes in Ste. Anne finished first in both the junior varsity boys 100 & 200 meters.

"I was pretty excited," said Nault. "I was pretty confident going into it because I've been training for awhile. The times were pretty quick. I got some personal best times and I really enjoyed it."

Nault ran the 100 meters last Friday.

He was 11.21 seconds in the preliminaries; 11.34 in the semifinals and 11.37 in the final where he finished .37 seconds ahead of Steven Koniuk of Sisler High School.

"It's usually one of my weaker races because my start isn't the best but I was really happy when I got a good time because that's a big improvement for me," said Nault. "I had the good start and I finished strong."

It was the same story in the 200 meters the following day as Nault was 23.46 seconds in the preliminaries; 23.60 in the semifinals and 22.93 in the final where he finished almost a full second ahead of Robin Brooks of Kelvin High School.

"I was really proud of that race because I had a hard time breaking 23 seconds this entire season and I finally got to break it on Saturday," said Nault. "I was very happy about that."

Nault recorded second place finishes in Brandon in both the 100 & 200 in his grade 9 year in 2016.

And now he's moving up to varsity after winning double gold in 2017.

"I think I'm going to have to do quite a bit more work in the 100 meters," said Nault. "The 200 meter I'm pretty confident with. That race is my better race because I have more time to make up ground. The 100 meter is just so quick that if you fall behind just for a little bit, you're going to be behind the rest of the race most likely."
