It was a fast-paced, back and forth show from two of the top teams in the MJHL and when the dust settled, it was the road team Winker Flyers defeating the Steinbach Pistons 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday night.

Steinbach had the upper hand in the first period with the help of three power-play opportunities but it was the Flyers top-ranked penalty kill getting the job done killing all three chances as the first period came with neither team scoring.

In the second, Winkler caught a break as a shot deflected off a Pistons defender and found it's way to the back of the net to make it 1-0 Winkler. Nolan McGuire was given credit for the goal.

About five minutes later, the Pistons tied the game as Will Koop (11) took a perfect cross-crease pass from Bradley Schoonbaert to knot the game at 1-1. Drew Worrad also got an assist on the goal.

While the scoring was finished for the period, the excitement was not as captain Braden Purtill dropped the gloves with Brett Opperman in what was the best fight of the season so far. Purtill got the decision after he landed a couple of strong right hands. Both players were sent off receiving game misconducts.

In the third, Jack Johnson put a perfect wrist shot top shelf to make it 2-1 Steinbach. Johnson has 7 goals for the year and is 2 points away from matching his totals from last season. Austin Heidemann and Tyson McConnell had the helpers.

Winkler was gifted a 5 on 3 power play with under six minutes to play and they capitalized as Matt Christian batted home a loose puck to tie the game 2-2.

The two teams skated the rest of the third and headed to overtime looking for the bonus point.

In the extra frame, the Flyers used their speed to drive towards the net and after Piston's goalie Matt Radomsky made the original save but Christian was there to bat home the rebound for his second of the game giving Winkler the 3-2 win ending the PIstons 8 game winning streak.

Both goalies in the game were exceptional. Radomsky finished the night with 21 saves while Troy Martyniuk of Winkler finished with 35. The Pistons power play had their chances but couldn't convert finishing 0-4 while the penalty kill allowed the tieing marker while down two men to finish 3-4.

Coaches Thoughts

Despite the final score, assistant coach Joey Moggach liked what he saw. "I liked our effort tonight. I liked our compete. We were engaged and I thought we played really well. It was a good hockey game like you'd expect from these two teams. The result is obviously not what we wanted but there are a lot of positives to take away from tonight."
