The Steinbach Pistons had six picks in the 2017 Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) draft and selected four forwards and two defence.All players selected in this year's draft have 2002 birth years.

Steinbach held the 11th overall selection in the six round draft held in Winnipeg Sunday morning. With this pick the Pistons selected Landon Roberts of Souris, who played with the Southwest Cougars B1AAA program last season.

"We like Landon (Roberts) for a number of reasons. One he may be your prototypical power forward, he plays with a lot of edge and is a real strong character kid," said Pistons head coach Paul Dyck. "One of the things we also liked about him is that he's an all around athlete and I think it really translates to his game on the ice."

The other five picks for the Pistons are as follows;

- Rd. 2, 22nd - Ty Thorpe - F - Brandon - Rink H.A. Nationals Bantam Prep
- Rd. 3, 33rd - Carter Bateman - D - Stonewall - Interlake Lightning B1AAA
- Rd. 4, 44th - Logan Danis - F - Winnipeg - Rink H.A. Nationals Bantam Prep
- Rd. 5, 55th - Lucas Fry - D - Winnipeg  - Winnipeg Monarchs B1AAA
- Rd. 6, 66th - Aedan Loschiavo - Winnipeg - Winnipeg Monarch B1AAA

"We were able to select a goaltender with our auto protects, so we got that out of the way. We looked at our list and what positions did we need to shore up on in the younger age group and forward position was definitely a priority for us," said Dyck. "That's one of the reasons we went with two in the first two rounds. We didn't want to over look the back end. We thought of where our list was at now we addressed the issues that we were looking to."

Also as part of the draft the Pistons are allowed to auto protect a pair of local players and this year Steinbach protected goaltender Cole Oswald and forward Caleb Thiessen

"Cole Oswald is a goaltender that we've selected and he went through the P.O.E. process in the spring, he's got good size, obviously we feel he's got good potential, and being a local guy is a plus also," explained Dyck. "Caleb Thiessen is a player we are going to keep our eye on moving forward too. He's got potential to develop into a nice forward. He thinks the game well and sees the ice pretty well. He's a young guy, but hopefully he develops at this stage to where he's in our lineup at some point."
