The South East Prairie Thunder saw their 2018 Allan Cup run come to an end Friday night in Rosetown, Saskatchewan.

David Brown made 35 saves as the Stoney Creek Generals defeated South East 5-2 in the semifinals.

Igor Gongalsky and Robert Hisey scored first period goals for the Generals who led 2-1 after the first period and 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Tyler Donati scored for Stoney Creek in the middle period.

Justin Donati and Ryan O’Mara rounded out the Generals scoring in the third.

“I think we started off pretty well,” said Prairie Thunder head coach Dustin Hughes. “We certainly tried pushing the pace a little bit but tried to be responsible in the neutral zone. Looking at their roster they got a lot of high end offensive guys that if you give them odd man rushes their going to capitalize. Unfortunately we didn’t bury a couple early. We gave them a few odd man rushes where we got a couple of big saves early but if you give them four or five in a matter five minutes they’re going to capitalize on one or two of them which they did.”

Tyler Dittmer and Reid Gow replied for South East.

“In the third period I thought we were all over them,” Hughes said. “Credit to their team and their goalie for keeping them in it. Unfortunately we hit four or five posts which would have made a big difference especially when it was 4-2 and we hit two posts on the power play directly after that. Credit to our guys. They worked really hard. It’s just unfortunate that only one of these teams gets to move on.”

South East goaltender Steve Christie stopped 21 of 25 shots.

It’s the second straight year the Prairie Thunder have lost in the semifinals.

South East fell 8-4 to the Lacombe Generals in the 2017 semis in Boutouche, New Brunswick.

“It’s a great tournament,” said coach Hughes. “It’s been around for a long, long time. I was able to win one as a player and I cherish those moments and I cherish the time – anytime I get back to the Allan Cup. I know the guys feel the same way.”

Stoney Creek and Lacombe will play in the 2018 Allan Cup final.
