The Steinbach Regional Secondary School's 21-game winning streak came to an end Monday at MTS Iceplex.

The Sabres dropped a 4-2 decision to Springfield Collegiate in game one of the Winnipeg High School Hockey League's best-of-three Free Press Division final.

"We were on a pretty big winning streak and I guess that was kind of our mindset going into today and that was our motivation," said SRSS captain Matthew Broesky. "Our team has never been in that situation of playoffs and high intensity like this and all these people. I think the emotions kind of got to us today."

Broesky and Nico Chiasson did the goal scoring for the Sabres who trailed 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 after the middle frame.

Chiasson's power play goal 48 seconds into the third period cut the deficit to 2-1 but Dillon Rebeck restored Springfield's two-goal advantage when he beat SRSS goaltender Avery Neufeld with 8:44 left in regulation.

Game two goes today at MTS Iceplex with the opening face-off at 5 p.m.

"We've got to play our best game of the year," said Sabres head coach Lawney Penner. "We've got to be up for the task and up for the battle. We got to bring it one level higher than whatever they're bringing. The boys will be ready."
