Steinbach Regional gave up three first period goals and dropped a 5-1 decision to the Garden City Fighting Gophers in the Sabres home-opener Wednesday at the T.G. Smith Centre.

Logan Klippenstein scored twice while Jack Burton and Cooper Wilson each had a goal and an assist for the Gophers.

Ethan Plett had the lone goal of the game for the SRSS who moved up to the Winnipeg High School Hockey League's Platinum Promotions Division One for the 2018-2019 season.

"The first period was a big adjustment for us as we got used to the speed of a fast Division One game," texted Sabres head coach Lawney Penner. "As a result we were down 3-0 after the first period. I thought the second half of the game was an even battle as shots on net, scoring chances and time of possession were even for the two teams."

"The boys did a great job elevating their game to play at a higher level," added Penner. "We're excited to be playing in Division One this year."

Steinbach Regional goaltender Riley Plett made 28 saves.

The Sabres next game is Friday in Ile des Chenes against Gabrielle Roy Les Roys.
