United Driver Training teamed up with emergency services to put on a mock collision at Southland Church Wednesday morning and it was a big success.

That according to Tony Falk with United Driver Training. He says approximately 230 high school students from across the Southeast attended the event.

"We could see that a lot of students were really impacted by it, there is a lot of work that went into this with local EMS and STARS and with the time they took and even just to completely remove the top of the car in order to even get access to people in the car. I think it will be something they won't forget right away."

Falk says they are hoping the students who attended the event will keep their hands off their phones and their attention on the road while driving.

Several grade nine drama students from the Steinbach Regional Secondary School helped with the mock collision by playing patients. Lule Marevci took on the role of the driver responsible for the collision.

"I was told that my parents texted me and I guess I was distracted and I got hit by a semi. It is actually pretty scary. At first, I was like 'I am going to laugh', but once it all started I literally felt like I was in the scene, I was shaking and almost felt like crying, it was hard, it was scary."

Hannah Neufeld helped with make-up to make the patients more believable.

"We had a day a couple of weeks ago when we were in drama all day and our teacher taught us how to do all of the blood and intrusions and bruises and all the make-up stuff. It was good to have an inside view to see what exactly can happen to all of these people who got hurt. It really impacted me to see how bad this stuff can get."

Troy Pauls is a flight paramedic with STARS Air Ambulance and a community educator. He says they were able to have the STARS helicopter come in and pick up a patient. He notes everything went fairly smoothly.

"The actors from SRSS were fantastic, we even managed to squeeze in the helicopter under some tight weather, a little late but we managed to make that happen and I hope it had a good impact on the kids."

Falk says the mock collision wrapped up with a funeral at Birchwood Funeral Chapel where members of STARS and Steinbach Emergency Services gave impact statements about their own personal experiences.
