Both Canadians and those who have immigrated to Canada, took in the Canada 150 Skate event Sunday at the T.G. Smith Arena in Steinbach.

Jason Peters with Steinbach Parks and Recreation says the event was a program through the federal government where communities across Canada would all be skating on the same day to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday.

Peters notes strapping on a pair of skates and getting on the ice is something Canadians are known for.

"It's just something about being Canadian and enjoying a family afternoon skating and so this is something we identify with as Canadians. We have some people here that aren't from Canada, we've talked to a few of them here that are new to our community and they think this is fabulous and this is true Canadiana."

Peters notes people were ready to skate starting at 11 when the rink opened and many families and skaters of various skill levels enjoyed the time on the ice. He adds they received grant money from the federal government to hand out hot chocolate and cookies, noting the Steinbach Pistons also came out to be amongst the many skaters.
