Chelster Hall, the most expensive publicly listed home in Canada, is entirely fitted with Loewen windows and doors.

The 47,000 square foot house is situated on a 10-acre lot on the coast of Lake Ontario and was recently listed at a jaw-dropping $65 million dollars.

Jon Sawatzky is the Director of Product at Loewen. He says the house was completed in 2006 and when it was finished they didn't get many photos, but now that it is for sale the Loewen team can appreciate their handiwork. He says Loewen spent a lot of time and energy on the project.

"When you look at it from this perspective and the manufacturing side, there is a lot of hours in terms of labour, design time, and all of that that goes into it. We really worked with the architect and the contractor because the project is so big, we couldn't deliver everything at one time, nor could we install it all at one time, it was just huge."

Sawatzky says many of the homes that Loewen windows and doors are put into are very large, but this one was a unique.

"Frequently we see things that are 8, 10, 12,000 square feet, even up to 20, but once you get up to that 50,000 square foot mark, those are a little bit special. I think the big challenge was in this case, everything was custom designed around the specifications for this project so those kinds of projects are a little more special and near and dear to our heart here."

Sawatzky says Hugo Powell, the homeowner, set out to build a house that would endure for centuries and Loewen is honoured to have been chosen for such a building.

"It is special because people realize the quality and craftsmanship that we offer, but at the same time, we get to be a part of their home. It doesn't really matter what scale it is, but when everyone is concerned about the quality of materials and those types of things, it is really special to be a part of it, it is just a great honour for everyone here in the plant."
