Steinbach city council has done a review of its policing priorities. City councillor Michael Zwaagstra says police ask council each year to establish priorities that they should focus on. And he adds the local detachment is been very committed to acting on those priorities.

High police visibility and stepped up traffic patrols are part of the 2018 police priorities set by Steinbach City Council."We're very pleased with the work that the RCMP have been doing in the City of Steinbach in the last few years. There has been some excellent leadership from Staff Sergeant Harold Laninga. We see clearly the results in regards to increased traffic enforcement, in regards to a continued focus in cracking down on organized crime and in the visibility of police. These are areas that the RCMP are working on very hard. We can see the results in the statistics."

Mayor Chris Goertzen concurs that the RCMP statistics for 2017 show the areas of police focus last year hit the mark.

"Certainly council has recognized that they want to have RCMP highly visible in our community. They also are concerned about organized crime that is somewhat present in our community when it comes to the drug trade. We see good efforts on the RCMP's part to reduce that. So, we're really encouraged to continue down the same path that we have this last year with the RCMP, making sure they are highly visible, that they are doing some traffic enforcement as well as working against organized crime."

The four police priorities established by council for 2018 are identical to 2017: 1) High police visibility 2) Vigilance on organized crime 3) Reducing property crimes, and 4) Traffic enforcement.
