Steinbach city council has decided against any changes following a citizen request to limit parking at the community mailboxes along Third Street at Reimer Avenue.

Council received a letter from Gordon Giesbrecht in October, asking that the city allow only brief stops near the mailboxes to make sure there is easy access for all people. He noted that at age 84, it can be a challenge to walk very far.

Steinbach Chief Administrative officer Troy Warkentin says the administration looked into the matter and says there is a contract in place that stipulates it is up to Canada Post to ensure there is adequate access to the mailboxes.

"With the overall maintenance agreement that is in place and the fact that Canada Post is operating as a utility within the city's right-of-way, if there are any concerns of individuals with respect to these mailboxes, it is suggested that individuals direct their concerns directly to Canada Post, generally the local office. Based on the concerns of Mr. Giesbrecht, administration is not recommending that there be any change to the parking in front of the mailboxes as there appears to be adequate parking to access the mailbox site."

Warkentin adds the city's study found there appears to be adequate parking at that site both on Third Street and on Reimer Avenue,

City council accepted the report and decided that no action would be taken.
