Smoke could be seen from miles away as 40 to 50 acres of field burned two miles south of Mitchell on Road 30E Monday afternoon.

Fire crews were called out shortly before 3 p.m. Hanover Fire Chief Paul Wiebe says the fire started from a garbage fire on one property and spread to a second property where three small buildings went up in flames.

Wiebe notes he's not surprised how fast it burned as two huge contributing factors were the wind and the extremely dry conditions.

property or if there's a value lost, that can still come back to you.

The smoke was thick and obstructed the view for drivers over Hanover Road West (Road 34N). Wiebe says firefighters take precautions to protect their health in these situations.

"Grass fires create a lot of smoke and heavy smoke just from incomplete combustion. The wind just feeds it and moves it over the top creating thick, thick grey smoke that's really heavy on the lungs. We have to, we try to fight it from the upwind side to stay out of that. We wear masks to protect our lungs and protect ourselves from smoke inhalation."

Wiebe says crews were able to save the house and a garage on the property.
