The Steinbach Fire Department put out a cooking fire in a garage Wednesday evening.

Crews were called just after 8:30pm to Wyndham Estates Drive. Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Mike Penner says when they arrived, there was thick smoke coming out of a garage window. He adds they quickly got that under control. "There had been some cooking in the garage, there was an oven range set up in the garage as a kitchen and something they were cooking caused a lot of smoke."

Penner notes the fire did not reach the attic but he says there was extensive heat and smoke damage in the garage. He adds a light haze of smoke got into the house and they are working to clear it out. Penner notes because the garage was drywalled, it helped keep the fire from spreading any faster.
