Steinbach city councillor Susan Penner is continuing to lobby for a pedestrian crosswalk across Highway #12 in front of Steinbach Christian School. She says it's becoming a bigger and bigger concern.

"There are up to 500 students on that campus on any given day and there's no pedestrian crosswalk over the busiest stretch of highway in our community for those students to cross. It is a concern that there is no pedestrian access there. I know the preference of Steinbach Christian School would be for Highways (Manitoba Infrastructure) to look at putting a crosswalk by the Campus Drive and Shell intersection because that's where a lot of students naturally cross."

Penner notes the city's annual traffic study looks at pedestrian demand at the Stonebridge Crossing/Millwork Drive intersection. But she says the real demand is one block further north at Campus Drive.

Meanwhile, councillor Michael Zwaagstra is pushing for a pedestrian crosswalk on Highway #12 at the Woodlawn Avenue/Friesen Avenue intersection.

Councillor Michael Zwaagstra says a crosswalk is needed on Hwy #12 at the Woodhaven/Friesen intersection.

"The challenge is that it doesn't meet the threshold that would merit a lighted crosswalk. However, we know that there are a significant number of people in the area who are looking to cross the street there. We do have seniors' residences in that area where people would like to cross the street. The study did indicate that it does seem there is a pedestrian desire to cross there. What we've asked the administration to do is look at some options to see whether there is a way that we can improve pedestrian crossing there because we want our intersections to be safe and we want them to be accessible."
