Council in the RM of De Salaberry is facing some resistance from residents regarding a proposed increase in fees for garbage collection. Reeve Marc Marion says the plan would see the

fee for residential garbage pick-up increase by $19 this year to $173. It would continue to increase in each of the next two years, rising to $186 dollars in 2019.

"Council has proposed to break it down over the three years so that there's less shock up front. But the fact is that the service does cost the RM a certain amount and we're trying to recoup as much as we can from the people who are using that service."

Marion notes part of the increase will be set aside in a reserve fund to pay for the eventual expansion of the landfill site.

"We're putting money aside for future growth of the landfill. We know that we're getting to a point where a new pit will have to be dug and those are really costly projects. So we're trying to assure ourselves that we're prepared for the future."

Due to public opposition, the plan went before a Manitoba Municipal Board hearing last week. A decision expected in mid-July.
