A Steinbach tradition will continue Sunday as the Eastman Choral Society presents its Easter Sunrise Service at Grace Mennonite Church. Conductor Michael Dueck says they will have about 30 singers in the choir this year. He notes this service always draws a certain group of people who sign up to sing in the choir.

"It varies every year because it's a community chorus that anybody can sign up for per event. It seems we attract people that just want to sing and sometimes we get people that just really, really enjoy this particular service and so they really go out of their way to make sure that they can the rehearsals and participate in this. They really enjoy not only the getting up and working through the music, but just being able to celebrate with the sounds and celebrate with the community."

Dueck says he has attended this service for many years and that influenced the music he has chosen now that he is the director.

"I was one of those people who just got really, really thrilled with the music that we sang, Easter hymns and other songs that are related are some of my favourites. So I got to choose some of my favourites like "Crown Him with Many Crowns" or "Christ Arose", "Thine is the Glory" and "Christ the Lord is Risen Today". These are some of the things that we'll get to do congregationally with everybody. This is a participatory service."

Dueck says there will also be plenty of special music by the choir, soloist Sheila Ardies and the Winnipeg Brass Quintet.

The service begins at 7:00 a.m.
