Paving has begun on Ridge Road.

Wes Fehr is Manager of Works and Operations for the Rural Municipality of Hanover. He says Bituminex Paving of Winnipeg started the work early Tuesday morning.

Crews will be working from west to east. They kicked off the project where Ridge Road meets Provincial Road 216 and over the course of the next week and a half will work their way towards Highway 12, a stretch of eight miles. Fehr says they work in one lane one day and then the next day do those same miles in the other lane. If all goes according to plan, he says they should have everything completed by Friday, June 2.

He notes there are flag people directing traffic.

"We also ask that motorists refrain from driving through this construction zone because any extra traffic does slow the work down," says Fehr. "We are also detouring as many people as we can around the site."

Meanwhile, Fehr says their roads came through spring much better than expected this year. Because of the high water table last fall and then several freeze/thaw cycles in winter, Fehr says they expected a lot of issues in spring.

"I would attribute that to just the good spring that we had," says Fehr. "We didn't get a lot of rain right off the start after the thaw."

Fehr says it was those weeks of drying that probably helped the situation the most.

According to Fehr, there were no roads that were impassable because of soft conditions. However, he says some of their hard surfaced roads, such as Blatz Road west of Mitchell has been deteriorating over the years. Hanover council is setting money aside to do some maintenance paving in the future.

"It's something that we have on our radar," says Fehr.
